Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Alexander 23 – Aftershock CD/LP (Interscope)
Aftershock is the hotly anticipated debut album from Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Alexander 23. Commandeered by Alexander 23 and Grammy-winning producer, Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo), the album features 11 tracks including "Hate Me If It Helps" which was co-written with Olivia Rodrigo plus the standouts "Crash" and "The Hardest Part". "The album is super dynamic, both emotionally and sonically," Alexander 23 told Wonderland Magazine. "The process of making it was such an incredibly difficult yet gratifying experience. It's brutally honest in every way, and there's a part of me that is terrified that people will hear it, but most of me can't wait for the world to see what has been consuming me for the past year." [Indie store exclusive ‘lemon yellow’ vinyl.]
Beabadoobee – Beatopia LP (Dirty Hit)
Formed in the imagination of a 7-year-old Beabadoobee and carried with her ever since, Beatopia is a fantastical yet deeply personal world that houses her most impressive work to date. Marking a huge progression, in 14 songs she traverses fuzzy rock, classic singer/songwriter, psychedelia, Midwest emo, and outright pop whilst remaining undeniably herself throughout. [Indie store exclusive 180gm green vinyl.]
Black Midi – Hellfire CD/LP+MP3 (Matador)
Black Midi present their third album and second in two years, Hellfire. The LP sees the London three piece at their most direct. Written in isolation in London in 2021 almost immediately after its predecessor Cavalcade - no band can quite build their own universe like Black Midi. Hellfire picks up right where Cavalcade left off. Where Schlagenheim was much more based on ‘jams' and collaboration, Cavalcade a mixture of isolation and collaboration, Hellfire falls on the other side of the spectrum of working in isolation. Musically, Hellfire builds on the brutality and intensity of Schlagenheim while also drawing on the more melodic elements that weave through Cavalcade. Lead-singer Geordie says, "If Cavalcade was a drama, Hellfire is like an epic action film," that delves into overlapping themes of pain, loss, and anguish. [Indie store exclusive translucent red vinyl.]
Camila Cabello – Familia LP (Epic)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Multi Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter returns with Familia, the follow up to 2019’s platinum sophomore album Romance. The new release features “Don’t Go Yet”, which premiered in 2021, along with the hit single “Bam Bam” featuring Ed Sheeran.
Camp Trash – Long Way, Slow Way LP (County Your Lucky)
Crafting songs that somehow feel original but familiar at the same time, Camp Trash blend ‘90s alternative rock and ‘00s emo with pop-punk sensibilities. [Limited-edition ‘double mint’ color vinyl.]
Chicago – Born For This Moment CD (BMG)
Over the entire course of 14 vibrant new songs, Born For This Moment (a.k.a. Chicago XXXVIII) encapsulates the scope and breadth of all the compositional and performance-propelled strengths at the ready in Chicago's seemingly endless arsenal of musical acumen. [Vinyl edition due October 21.]
Phil Cook – All These Years CD/LP (Psychic Hotline)
"All These Years" is Cook's first solo instrumental album on his primary instrument, recorded at NorthStar Church of the Arts in Durham, NC by his cousin and collaborator Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Indigo Girls). These ten pieces came to life on a long-cared-for and much-loved one-hundred-year-old Steinway over a week in the spring of 2021. [Limited edition coke bottle clear vinyl.]
The Dream Syndicate – Ultraviolet Battle Hymns And True Confessions LP (Fire)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl, including an indie store exclusive translucent violet color pressing. The brand-new album from The Dream Syndicate blends vintage Krautrock, Eno-like ambience, Neu-inspired rhythmic groove, and a Californian sunbaked sheen into their classic psychedelic, melodic, hue. The Dream Syndicate has moved well past their early Velvet Underground influences and taken on British glam, German prog, and more.
Alex Dupree – Thieves CD/LP (Keeled Scales)
Dupree got his musical start in Austin, Texas, and his voice still has some Heartworn Highways-era color to it. It's a quality meant for the stories told on Thieves. Old-Hollywood string crescendos and delicate acoustic phrases pass in and out of focus behind the vocals, a lush backdrop for the songs' stark dialogue. A wide array of traditional instruments fill out these guitar songs. It's the thoughtful arrangements paired with Dupree's aptitude for songwriting that makes for such a special record. Thieves is the story of starting over. It's a sturdy songwriter's album with heady, heavy folk and country flourishes. It's about coming to terms with the uncanny patterns of your life, the strange repetitions you can't escape. [Limited-edition bone white vinyl.]
Elf Power – Artificial Countrysides CD/LP (Yep Roc)
Artificial Countrysides is Athens, Ga – based Elf Power's fourteenth album. The band expand their sound on this record to glorious effect, adding marimba, harpsichord, synth bass, distorted drum machine loops, and mellotron to their time-tested mix of fuzz guitars, Moog keyboards, pummeling drums, and layered acoustic guitars, achieving a satisfying and unique synthesis of traditional and futuristic sounds. Lyrically the album mirrors this approach by discussing the difficulties and advantages of dealing with modern life's digital and artificial landscape, balanced with the natural world. [Limited-edition translucent purple vinyl.]
Flume – Palaces 2xLP (Future Classic)
Recently released on CD and cassette – now available on vinyl. Flume kicks off a new cycle with his highly anticipated third album, Palaces. The 13-track LP shows off his ability to expertly push the boundaries of a sound he helped define, while delivering songs that are still undeniably "Flume." Flume is an artist that has remained uncompromising in his vision and artistry since the beginning, and Palaces is no exception. Featuring a diverse range of artists from rising stars like Caroline Polachek, to established tastemakers like Damon Albarn, this album spans across genres.
Ronnie Foster – Reboot CD/LP (Blue Note)
With his first new album in 36 years, Reboot, Ronnie Foster returns to Blue Note Records 50 years after releasing his debut album, Two Headed Freap, on the label in 1972. Reboot is a collection of originals and covers that mark a fresh start for Foster who has whipped up an omnidirectional brew of Hammond Organ grooves that pay homage to the past but more often reflect Ronnie's restlessness for ushering in the new. The album is dedicated to the memory of his longtime friend Dr. Lonnie Smith.
Gwar – The New Dark Ages CD (Pit)
The Scumdogs return with their first album of new material in five years. 14 brand-new songs of destruction and dastardly deeds. [Vinyl and cassette editions due September 16.]
Interpol – The Other Side Of Make-Believe CD/LP+MP3 (Matador)
If fate didn't quite ordain the circumstances for Interpol's seventh album, it was at least fortunate that the band had happily concluded their Marauder cycle on stage in front of 30 thousand-odd Peruvian fans. Rather than be sent scrambling like so many other musicians on tour or promoting new music, when lockdown clamped in March 2020, Interpol quickly got into a productive mood. Coming from a group whose early work was characterized by Polish knife-wielders and incarcerated serial killers, you might expect Interpol's pandemic record to be an emotional tar pit – doubly so, given the presence of towering producer-engineer duo Flood and Alan Moulder on the boards. But Paul Banks felt the call to push in a "counterbalancing" direction, with paeans to mental resilience and the quiet power of going easy.
JayWood – Slingshot CD/LP (Captured Tracks)
Canadian songwriter and producer Jeremy Haywood-Smith needed an escape from his state of mourning when he began working on Slingshot, his most recent LP as JayWood, the recording project he started in 2015. After the loss of his mother in 2019 and a global standstill with multiple social crises throughout 2020, Haywood-Smith yearned for some forward momentum. "The idea of looking back to go forward became a really big thing for me – hence the title, Slingshot." Haywood-Smith explains. Feeling disconnected from his past and ancestry after the death of a parent, Haywood-Smith made a conscious effort to better understand his identity and unique Black experience living in the predominantly white province of Manitoba. Through a year of self-reflection and reconnection with his roots, Haywood-Smith has made the biggest leap forward for his project JayWood by simply looking back. Merging fantasy scenarios, personal anecdotes, and infectious pop and dance instrumentals, Slingshot is a self-portrait of JayWood at his surface and his depths. [Indie store exclusive canary-yellow vinyl.]
Jennylee – Heart Tax LP (Virgin)
Heart Tax, the second solo album from Warpaint's Jennylee, features collaborations with Goldensuns, Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan, Trentemøller, and Warpaint bandmates Belief and Stella Mozgawa. Started in Southern California and finished in Salt Lake City, this album feels present-day Jenny yet embodies pent-up old feelings. Heart Tax encompasses a journey of introspection, artistry, and an allowance of free stream-of-consciousness to feel the healing of old baggage and energy.
Damien Jurado – Reggae Film Star LP (Maraqopa)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. 25 years since his debut album Waters Ave S. came out, Jurado is more prolific, driven, and creative than ever. The twelve mystical songs on Reggae Film Star are gorgeously cinematic and feature a rich production and diverse sonic textures.

The Kut’s sophomore album, Grit, features the recently released singles “ANIMO” and Satellite plus eight more tracks recorded by seven members of The Kut collective. Produced by James LeRock Loughrey, the album sees Princess Maha feature as vocalist/guitarist alongside the collective, as well as moonlighting as drummer and bassist for two tracks. [Vinyl edition – including two colorways: pink and blue – due November 4.]
Launder – Happening CD/LP+MP3 (Ghostly Int’l)
Launder's music had seen unexpected attention, with Stereogum placing it "somewhere at the intersection of '90s lo-fi and shoegaze," and Gorilla vs. Bear noting Cudlip's "serious knack for the kind of wistful, soaring choruses that immediately make you feel like you've known these songs forever." [Limited-edition pink vinyl.]
The Linda Lindas – Growing Up CD/LP+MP3 (Epitaph)
The Linda Lindas first played together as members of a pickup new wave cover band of kids assembled by Kristin Kontrol (Dum Dum Girls) for Girlschool L.A. in 2018 and then formed their own garage punk group just for fun. Sisters Mila de la Garza (drummer) and Lucia de la Garza (guitar), cousin Eloise Wong (bass), and family friend Bela Salazar (guitar) developed their chops as regulars at all-ages matinees in Chinatown, where they played with original L.A. punks like The Dils, Phranc, and Alley Cats, went on to open for riot grrrl legends Bikini Kill and architect Alice Bag as well as DIY heavyweights Best Coast and Bleached, and were eventually featured in Amy Poehler's movie Moxie. A product of generations of underground music in L.A. and beyond, The Linda Lindas' full-length debut Growing Up channels classic punk, post punk, power pop, new wave, and other surprises into timelessly catchy and cool songs sung by all four members – each with her own style and energy.
Lizzo – Special CD/LP (Atlantic)
When you love yourself, anything becomes possible. Channeling boundless self-confidence through a downright earth-quaking voice, colorful persona, and undeniable star power, Lizzo struts into the spotlight and steps up with a whole lot of sass, spirit, and soul. Embracing her vocal range like never before and celebrating herself to the fullest, she speaks her mind, censors nothing, and delivers an enviable level of honesty, pure passion, and fresh fire. Lizzo follows-up 2019's Cuz I Love You with the new album Special which is introduced by the singles "Rumors", "Special", and "About Damn Time". "Let the 2022 takeover begin!" the singer exclaims. [Indie exclusive color variant shipped late. We have the standard black vinyl.]
The Local Honeys – The Local Honeys CD/LP (La Honda)
The Local Honeys is a third album that is truly like a debut. With a focus on original songs and the centerpiece being traditional instrumentation and styles of Kentucky. The album has strong themes of identity, ruralism, storytelling with huge characters (both human and animal), and the state of rurality and the issues we still face today. Building traditional music into a grand sonic scape. Layering banjos and fiddles with electric guitar, organs, and feedback. Produced by Jesse Ray Wells (co-producer of Tyler Childers's Long Violent History) who has been the band's mentor in music for nearly 10 years.
Lera Lynn – Something More Than Love CD (Ruby Range)
Something More Than Love began as a song about Lynn's absolute surrender to the realities of new motherhood but quickly morphed into a song about the shared experiences that bind us together. It's the story of a life cycle that repeats, every termination point becoming a starting line, every edge giving way to the circular slope of the ouroboros. [Vinyl edition due August 19.]
Lynyn – Lexicon LP (Sooper)
Lynyn's debut LP is essential listening for anyone interested in the compositional heights of electronic, synth, and modular music. It is a project at home with the likes of giants in the genre like Aphex Twin or Squarepusher.
Arlo McKinley – This Mess We’re In CD/LP (Oh Boy)
This Mess We're In is Arlo's third album and the follow up to 2020's Die Midwestern which debuted at No. 5 Current Country and No. 7 Americana/Folk. When asked what he hopes listeners will get from This Mess We're In, he says, "I hope they can identify with things they're too ashamed to talk about or feel. There's such a stigma that goes along with things like addiction and mental health. I just want them to know that I go through all that stuff too. I would just like to make them feel a little less alone. At least for the 47 minutes of the album, you can remove yourself from the world and just let everything disappear for a bit." [indie store exclusive translucent orange vinyl. All records and CDs from Grimey’s are signed by Arlo! Available in the shop and in the Grimey’s webstore.]

[Limited-edition clear with multi-color splatter vinyl.]
Tami Neilson – Kingmaker CD/LP (Outside Music)
Tami's story is at the center of this feminist tapestry: from singing with Kitty Wells at the age of 10, slipping demo tapes into the laundry bags of stars to now singing with Willie Nelson on "Kingmaker" - from humble beginnings to success, on her own terms. Tami Neilson is a game changer, a cage shaker, a Kingmaker. [Indie store exclusive ‘peach blossom’ pink vinyl.]
Nightlands – Moonshine CD/2xLP (Western Vinyl)
Amid massive global paradigm shifts Dave Hartley (aka Nightlands) became a father twice over and left his native Philadelphia for Asheville, where the pace of daily life is slower and it's easier to maintain a zoomed-out perspective on modern life. From the newfound refuge of a studio, he built using the bones of a barn attached to his hundred-something-year-old house in the mountains, Hartley has tailored a collection of well-crafted pop rock, pointedly titled Moonshine. Guided by some of the harmonic sensibilities that have helped make The War On Drugs a force in modern music, Moonshine combines immaculate-yet-dense vocal stacks and billowy clouds of effected keyboards with classic songcraft, revealing previously unseen acreage in the unfurling dreamscape that is Nightlands. [Indie store exclusive yellow w/ orange vinyl.]
Ozomatli – Marching On LP (Blue Élan)
Ozo’s new songs, stronger-than-ever brotherhood, and the potent emotional impetus behind Marching On further cements the legacy begun with the band’s 1998 self-titled debut. With musician/producer David Garza (Fiona Apple, Sparta) producing in pre-pandemic 2020 at El Paso’s Sonic Ranch, Ozo were honored with esteemed musical guests who contributed to the 11-song album including B-Real (Cypress Hill), Guatemalan singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno, J.J. FAD (of "Supersonic" Fame) and Lisa Lisa (Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam).

Two decades into delivering social commentary via their blistering brand of punk rock, Rise Against's latest, Nowhere Generation II, may be their most poignant, as it sums up the struggles, injustices, and collective action of a generation. The new single, "Last Man Standing", is smooth in its most sensitive moments and roaring like a tempest at its peak. Brimming with punk rock spirit, it begs that we answer who and what is left if we continue on our current path. [Vinyl edition due October 28.]
Gareth Sager Quartet – Ghost Ship Trance Lamentations LP (Org Music)
Ghost Ship Trance Lamentations is the latest full-length album from Gareth Sager. Recorded in Studio 1 at the famous Abbey Road studios, Ghost Ship Trance Lamentations finds Sager backed by bassist Debs Spanton, cellist Lisa Watchorn, and frequent collaborator Dave Wright on saxophone. The quartet creates a lush and soothing sonic palette across 15 piano-driven miniatures.
Senses Fail – Hell Is In Your Head CD/LP (Pure Noise)
“Since emerging out of New Jersey almost 20 years ago, Senses Fail have been through numerous line-up changes, but the one constant is frontman Buddy Nielsen. At this point, you could suggest that Senses Fail and Buddy Nielsen are one and the same. Over the course of seven albums and three EP’s, Nielsen and Senses Fail have evolved to the point where the band’s songwriting has become biographical and cathartic. Musically, HIIYH is executed with a sense of familiarity; emotive choruses, melodic leads, and driving rhythms. Early on, ‘End Of The World/A Game Of Chess’, soon exemplifies this brilliantly. Joined by SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s Connie Sgarbossa, it’s a blistering, heart-wrenching account of what Nielsen describes as “generational trauma” – alcoholism in his family. For the most part, HIIYH pacing is relentless, yet it’s all tied together by Nielsen’s personal narrative. As a standalone record, HIIYH can be appreciated for its dependable and honest songwriting, and reliable, if slightly familiar, melodic execution.” – Sêan Reid, Punktastic [Indie store exclusive beer & gold butterfly with bone splatter vinyl.]
Superorganism – World Wide Pop CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)
Superorganism return with their second album World Wide Pop, their first new music since 2018's self-titled debut. Blasting back with 13-tracks that explore the infinite versus the intimate, taking in friendship, time, connectedness, and the universe; World Wide Pop contemplates the contradiction of being hopeful and curious when faced with relentless consumerism and overwhelming noise. However, choosing optimism, Superorganism believe in the power of pop music and all the things it can do. World Wide Pop bridges the personal and existential whilst delivering a bag full of tunes laced with deadpan humor. It also brings in an international set of collaborators including Stephen Malkmus, CHAI, Pi Ja Ma, Dylan Cartlidge & legendary musician, and actor Gen Hoshino. [Indie store exclusive gold vinyl.]
Tosca – Osam 2xLP (!K7)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. For Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber, the idea of rebirth is a creative driving force - an artistic device which not only informs their work but anchors it. As the avant-garde electronic group Tosca, the two artists have lived many musical lives, from their early electronic experiments with tape decks to the blissed-out dub compositions with which they have made their name.
Viagra Boys – Cave World Cassette (Fuga)
For those who find Fat White Family a touch too debonair, Sweden’s Viagra Boys go one gristlier. Their two albums since 2018 have documented all manner of criminal, antisocial and self-destructive gutter life in visceral post-punk style. The band even found space on last year’s Welfare Jazz to cover John Prine’s country duet of redneck romance ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ with Amyl And The Sniffers’ Amy Taylor playing the trucker-mouthed Juliet to singer Sebastian Murphy’s sleazy Romeo. If the worst of times brings out the worst in people, Viagra Boys are set to be icons of the age, and Cave World its defining document. As scientists prepare a time capsule of humanity for future species to find, it’s a shoo-in. – Mark Beaumont, NME [Vinyl (two colorways) due July 29.]
Young Guv – GUV III & IV 2xLP (Run For Cover)
Young Guv’s expansive GUV III & IV ties both full-length albums from the Guv himself, Ben Cook, this year together into one complete package. Written entirely in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range of New Mexico following a cancelled tour in the spring of 2020, the songs on GUV III & IV range in the way that only a Young Guv record can - from Laurel Canyon jangle to British Invasion blues-pop to AM-radio Americana to the mildly sleazy electro pop on a song-by-song basis. But at its core, GUV III & IV is a collection of songs dedicated and testifying to the eternal healing power of love. [Limited-edition yellow vinyl.]

Bright Eyes – Letting Off The Happiness [Reissue/1998] LP (Dead Oceans)
Bright Eyes – A Collection Of Songs Written And Recorded 1995-1997 (A Companion) 12” (Dead Oceans)
It's the desire to celebrate their sonic bounty that first got Oberst and the band excited about the idea of comprehensive reissues. But this wouldn't be a Bright Eyes project if a moment devoted to appreciating the past weren't turned into an opportunity to connect with the future. That's where the nine companion EPs come in. Or as Oberst puts it, "the supplemental reading" for the primary reissues: One six-track EP per reissued album, each featuring five reworked songs from that album.

Olive green color vinyl pressing with alternate cover art. “This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth. It was very important to me that the cover art conveyed the sentiment of my journey over the past few months. The dichotomy of the Madonna and the Whore. The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully. My body has belonged to the world in many ways the past few years, and this image is my means of reclaiming my autonomy and establishing my pride and strength as a life force for my human being.”

Oksana Linde - Aquatic and Other Worlds (1983-1989) LP (Buh Records)
Aquatic And Other Worlds is Linde's first album, compiling electronic synthesizer pieces recorded between 1983 and 1989. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1948, into a family of Ukrainian immigrants, Oksana Linde's work became known at the beginning of the '80s, coinciding with the emergence of a new scene of Venezuelan electronic synthesizer music. In 1981, at the age of 33, Oksana Linde left her job as a researcher due to health issues and began to devote more time to music and painting. She borrowed a Polymoog synthesizer, then a TEAC open reel tape recorder and a Moog Source. With this equipment she set up her small home studio and began to compose her first pieces around 1983-1984. Linde's music can be intensely hypnotic and psychedelic, but also melodic and playful, with layers of sounds establishing a cinematic narrative, very typical of the tradition of synthesizer music.

Sunny and The Sunliners – Mr. Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 2 LP (Big Crown)
Sunny Ozuna is a living legend and a man worthy of praise on many levels. In the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than Sunny is. He became a star right out of high school in the late '50s and hasn't looked back in the seven decades since. Among countless other honors and notable achievements, Sunny was the first Latino artist to appear on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" (in 1963). He penned "Smile Now, Cry Later," a hit for him and The Sunliners, which along with the theater masks that grace the album's cover, became staples in the Chicano Soul and Lowrider Soul cultures. Mr. Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 2 features some lesser-known gems that hold court with his hits. [Limited-edition red vinyl.]
Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments – Bait And Switch [Reissue/1995] LP (Dot Matrix)
Clear vinyl pressing. A journey to the center of tinnitus and inebriation, TJSA's debut album caterwauled like a drunk banshee through the final decade of the most prosperous century on Planet Earth. A local rock band that conquered the world in its own modest fashion, Bait And Switch perfected a homegrown approach to making raw, truly no-frills rock 'n' roll.
TOPS – Tender Opposites [Reissue/2012] LP (Arbutus)
10th Anniversary blue color vinyl reissue. Originally released in 2012, Tender Opposites features a lush array of timelessly crafted songs strengthened by delicate intimacy. These are moving songs that succeed earnestly, disregarding trends and mythmaking, focusing instead on pure pop craftsmanship.
Various Artists - 3AM Spares 2LP (Efficient Space)
3AM Spares is a new collection of Australian EDM compiled Andras and Instant Peterson that encompasses the darker sounds and later nights of the 1990s and beyond. No longer confined to beer barns and back rooms, this generation of producers, DJs, clubbers, and ravers embraced a new culture of machine-metaphor and chemical love. Future Sound Of Melbourne's "Resist The Beat" embodies a time when the country's youth united with juggernaut stamina, partying beyond the long arm of the law. Restored from the original DATs, this debut 12" incited label offers from Jeff Mills, Frank De Wulf, and Carl Cox. Released by the likes of Clan Analogue, Creative Vibes, Volition, DanceNet, Juice and Psy-Harmonics, this era's material has evaded sufficient digital documentation until now. Often these bedroom experiments existed solely for compilation inclusions.
Don Wilkerson – Preach Brother! [Reissue/1962] LP (Blue Note)
The soulful Louisiana-born tenor saxophonist, Don Wilkerson, made his Blue Note debut in 1962 with Preach Brother! - one of the most exuberant yet under-recognized soul jazz classics of the Blue Note catalog. The album featured the Ray Charles alum with Grant Green (guitar), Sonny Clark (piano), Butch Warren (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums). Part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, featuring all-analog audio mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes.
