Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Beach Bunny – Emotional Creature CD/LP/Cassette (Mom + Pop)
As lockdown approached in 2020, Chicago-based singer Lili Trifilio was wrapping up a tour in support of Beach Bunny's debut album, Honeymoon. Suddenly, she found herself back at her parents' house, coping with her new reality. To deal, she retreated into sci-fi stories and her always-active imagination. She envisioned new places to travel in her mind, thus dreaming up big, bombastic pop sounds to construct Beach Bunny's highly anticipated sophomore album, Emotional Creature. Simultaneously about personal growth, Emotional Creature is a collection of highly relatable songs that capture the highs and lows of new relationships, the joys, and vulnerabilities of letting someone in, the gut-wrenching realities of experiencing anxiety, leaving toxic relationships, and seeing yourself through the eyes of the one you love. These complex feelings are expertly contrasted with ultra-poppy melodies, anthemic choruses, and a slight punk edge. With its openhearted, vulnerable themes and progressive, hook-filled take on pop rock and pop punk, Emotional Creature only further cements Beach Bunny and Trifilio's well-earned reputation as a leading voice of their generation. [Limited edition orange w/ yellow color vinyl.]
The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Fire Doesn’t Grow On Trees LP (A Records)
Recorded in Berlin and remotely between 2020 and 2021, The Brian Jonestown Massacre returns with their 19th full-length studio album. Fire Doesn't Grow On Trees is the beginning of a thrilling new phase for Anton Newcombe and his band. Joining him in the studio and remotely for this album were Ricky Maymi (guitars), Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt (keyboards), Hakon Adalsteinsson (guitar), Hallberg Daði Hallbergsson (bass), and Uri Rennert (drums). Originally, Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones; psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones. But his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegaze genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.
Robin Carolan / Sebastian Gainsborough – Northman (Original Soundtrack) CD/LP+MP3 (Sacred Bones)
Composers Robin Carolan (Tri-Angle Records) and Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel) were given a task of epic proportions when director Rob Eggers (The VVitch, The Lighthouse) asked them to create the score for his ambitious and highly anticipated new film, The Northman. They needed to make a score that both honored the immense research that had gone into the authenticity of this Viking era period piece and complimented the cinematic maximalism of the film for a modern audience. The artists stretched themselves to the depths of their creativity and the resulting album is a gorgeous sonic tableau that places the listener right in the center of the film. [Indie store exclusive red vinyl.]
Nicola Cruz - Self Oscillation 12" (Rhythm Section International)
Self Oscillation is made up of five club-ready psychedelic workouts swaying with natural momentum, from Ecuadorian superstar Nicola Cruz. The internationally renowned producer, Nicola Cruz, has been instrumental in pioneering the sound of Andean music over the last decade, finding his own unique way to tap into Latin America's illustrious musical past to create something utterly contemporary. On this EP, Nicola Cruz fuses experimental production techniques with underwater, bass-heavy constructions. Moods change like the tides; from euphoric highs with acid riffs and Latin drum patterns, the music quickly dives to moody submarine basslines and dark, frenetic rhythms.
Cuco – Fantasy Gateway CD/LP (Interscope)
Fantasy Gateway opens a new chapter for Cuco over the course of 12 songs which includes the new single "Caution". Cuco shares the meaning behind the single: "‘Caution' is a song that talks about going through different mental health issues and not wanting to bombard the people around you with your problems, so you just keep them to yourself, but sometimes putting all that weight on yourself results in a feeling of being out of control when everything explodes." The sophomore effort also contains features from Kacey Musgraves, Adriel Favela, DannyLux and Bratty. [Limited-edition blue vinyl.]
Dawes – Misadventures Of Doomscroller CD/LP (Rounder)
From the first note, Misadventures Of Doomscroller, the eighth studio album by the Los Angeles based rock band Dawes, sets a tone all its own. The 6-track wonderfully epic and at times psychedelic album highlights Dawes' popular live shows, showcasing their natural musicality. Taylor Goldsmith explains, "We've always tried to be minimalists. Now we wanna be maximalists. See how far a song can take us. Find the song within a song. Strive for a kind of excellence we always quietly believed we had inside us but didn't have the balls to put it down on tape." [Indie store exclusive blood orange vinyl. An indie store exclusive triple brown color 10" vinyl box set is due September 30.]
Ben Harper – Bloodline Maintenance CD (PIAS)
Ben Harper returns with his eagerly anticipated, fiercely personal soulful album, Bloodline Maintenance. The album is preceded by the single "We Need To Talk About It" which, propelled by Harper's blisteringly funky guitar, defiantly addresses the wounds of slavery through a sharp-edged call-and-response with gospel backing vocals and pounding rhythms augmented by the distinctive sound of the African talking drum. "This whole album is really soul music reinterpreted with a lap steel," Harper says. "I believe strongly that music has this great capacity for communication like a sonic newsprint. And I've always believed that the music I write has a place in the choir." Bloodline Maintenance is a work largely inspired by the loss of a long-time friend and the lingering influence of his mercurial and charismatic father. Harper performed most of the instruments on his own, spanning guitar, bass, drums, and an eclectic assortment of percussions including a plastic toy snare. [Vinyl edition due September 30.]
Imperial Triumphant – Spirit Of Ecstasy CD (Century Media)
Avantgarde metal band Imperial Triumphant deliver their fifth studio album Spirit Of Ecstasy. The trio from New York manage to surpass their already brilliant recent long-player Alphaville which was released in 2020. John Moreland – Birds In The Ceiling CD/LP (Old Omens)
John Moreland's new album Birds In The Ceiling is a nine-song collection that offers the most comprehensive insight into the thoughts and sounds swimming around in his head to date. A compelling blend of acoustic folk and avant-garde pop playfulness, Birds In The Ceiling lives confidently in a space of its own, enriched by tradition but never encumbered by it. The songwriting that has stunned fans and critics alike since 2015's High On Tulsa Heat remains potent, while the sonic evolution that unfolds on the record feels like a natural expansion of 2020's acclaimed LP5. [Indie store exclusive blue vinyl.]
The Kooks – 10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark CD/LP (AWAL)
“With a career that spans nearly two decades, it is hardly any wonder that indie trailblazers The Kooks have been on the lookout for new ideas and fresh sources of inspiration, and their sixth studio album marks a different creative route for the Brighton band. Influenced by electro-pop, the use of digital technology plays a key part on 10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark, and it lets you hear The Kooks like you have not heard them before. Experimental and playful in places, the record adds new elements to their sound, and the finished result does surprise.” – Susan Hansen, Clash Music [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]

Oceans Of Slumber – Starlight And Ash CD (Century Media)
Texas-based New Southern Gothic outfit Oceans Of Slumber transmogrify on incredible new album, Starlight And Ash. The chrysalis stage that lasted from Winter (2016) to wildly applauded Oceans Of Slumber (2020) is now over. Equipped with a profoundly deep musical background, a staunch reverence for the American South, and starry-eyed artistic curiosity, Oceans Of Slumber has created a sonic expression like no other. They've become singular, the first entry (and likely not the last) into a style that can only be called New Southern Gothic. Fronted by the inimitable power, range, and grace of vocalist Cammie Beverly, Starlight And Ash posits Oceans Of Slumber in a league of their own. This is as much eloquent extensions of famed singer-songwriters Nick Cave and Chris Stapleton as it is the heartbreaking pulse of Type O Negative and Katatonia. Starlight And Ash isn't metal, but its edges are. [A limited-edition orange color vinyl pressing is available for special order.]
ODESZA – The Last Goodbye CD/2xLP+MP3 (Ninja Tune)

A project rife with brightness and emotion, nostalgic yet rooted in the present, it serves as a sweeping sonic experience that speaks to themes of connection, reminiscence, and the impact we impart on one another. It's a vivid celebration of the people and moments that have left fingerprints on our existence, echoing throughout the record. Gilbert O’Sullivan – Driven CD/LP (Union Square)
Twentieth album from the acclaimed singer-songwriter. Gilbert O’Sullivan’s unique blend of melodic craftsmanship, witty wordplay, topical acuity and surrealist humor has given him an enduring and endearing career. His song writing knack has outlived and transcended fashion, global million-sellers, critical acclaim, and an occasional tendency to reclusiveness. Now recognized as one of our great singer-songwriters, he’s been championed in recent years by everyone from Paul Weller, Nina Simone, Mick Hucknall, Squeeze’s Difford & Tilbrook, Neil Diamond to Gary Barlow (whose Crooner Sessions Gilbert duetted on earlier this year), Empire Of The Sun, Boy George and The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess. [Limited-edition clear vinyl.]
The Sadies – Colder Streams LP+MP3 (Yep Roc)
Limited blue color vinyl pressing. Since their formation in 1994, Toronto's Sadies have developed, even perfected, a style of music that is uniquely their own. Possessing a deep fondness and reverence for the best of country, bluegrass, and blues (CBGB!), they are equally informed and influenced by everything from ‘60s garage and psychedelic rock (Pebbles, Nuggets, et al) to surf instrumentals and punk rock.
Ty Segall – Hello Hi CD/LP/Cassette (Drag City)
Tossing down straight acoustic shots with electric guitar back, Hello, Hi rides through the valley of yer ol' Canyon legends, finding an isolated place to unspool Ty Segall's copious reserves of nervous energy beneath an open sky. Swarms of harmony vocals caper among the clouds, but there's a rider on the horizon behind, with crossbow trained on his very own heart – the engine driving all the relationships of life, whether down Broadway or over the cliffs at night. Whatever doesn't get killed is getting stronger all the time. A lean, mean deal, baked in saltwater and sunlight, compassion pouring out its beautiful blue eyes.

Twen - One Stop Shop LP (twen enterprises)
The sophomore album from Nashville-based DIY juggernauts Twen. In an age of mediocre songs with pristine studio-production, One Stop Shop provides an antidote with 10 hook-laden compositions, chock-full of purposeful, inspired rock songs about modern life in 2022. Half-written tunes, downloaded beats, multi-producer records, stylists and PR teams can run for the hills. The songs are beautifully evocative, political without patronizing or pandering, and widespread in their diversity of sounds & emotions. Title track “One Stop Shop (For A Fading Revolution)” is a propulsive overture for the end times, while lead single “HaHaHome” is an ode to brit-pop with a Stone-roses-esque bassline that could even make Paul McCartney jealous. “Brooklyn Bridge” showcases the duo’s ability to craft metaphorically complex lyrics that are simultaneously immediate because of the heartfelt prosody of Jane Fitzsimmons’ vocals- vocals that until now, would’ve seemed out of twen’s former wheelhouse as “indie-psych-rockers”. Seaglass blue vinyl.
Jack White – Entering Heaven Alive CD/LP (Third Man)
Jack White returns in 2022 with not one but two brand new albums – his first new full-length collections in over four years. Fear Of The Dawn arrived in April, while Entering Heaven Alive is now available. White has been writing and recording music throughout the entirety of the past several years, creating two entirely distinctive albums – each defined by different inspirations, different themes, different moods. Introduced by the countrified "Taking Me Back (Gently)" (which appears on Fear Of The Dawn in a blazing electric version), Entering Heaven Alive is the fifth solo studio album from the founding member of The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather. [Indie store exclusive ‘Detroit denim’ blue vinyl. Free poster with purchase! Available in the record shop and in the Grimey's webstore.]

John Zorn – Suite For Piano CD (Tzadik)
Inspired in part by the Goldberg Variations and Schoenberg's solo piano music, Suite For Piano is Zorn's very personal take on some of the oldest traditional classical forms. It is performed here by one of the most dedicated, virtuosic, and passionate interpreters in the Zorn universe, Brian Marsella, whose educational experience (too "jazz" for the classical world and too "classical" for the jazz world) makes him the perfect interpreter of Zorn's cross-pollinating musical poetics.

The Hagers – The Complete Capitol Albums CD (Omnivore)
Jim and John Hager recorded three albums for Capitol Records: The Hagers and Two Hagers Are Better Than One in 1970, and Motherhood, Apple Pie & The Flag the following year. The identical twins also logged a staggering 135 appearances on the television staple Hee Haw between 1969 and 1985. While all critically acclaimed and being dubbed "the next big thing" in country music, the albums did not chart as well as expected, but those who know country music and Buck Owens, know they were something special. The Complete Capitol Albums collects these sought-after albums, coupling them together on CD for the first time, and debuting them digitally as well.
Hot Chocolate – Hot Chocolate [Reissue/1971] LP (Numero)
Limited brown color vinyl pressing. Combined with the planet's leading Afrocentric confectionary and its derivative beverage, more than a few light bulbs were set to go off in newly christened practice spaces globally upon Hot Chocolate's inevitable suggestion. Little did Ragland know, an interracial band of musical Englishmen were eyeballing the same nom de chanson in their native Brixton. They approached John Lennon for clearance for their reggae cover of "Give Peace A Chance," but the powerful Beatle liked their interpretation so much, he added them to the band's Apple Records roster, thrusting the Brits ahead in the race to make Hot Chocolate a household name for something other than dark, sweet beverages. Despite the potential confusion-and perhaps in hope of capitalizing on it, Lou Ragland began filling his mug with a host of recordings that would make up his Hot Chocolate's eponymous debut.

Randy Newman – Good Old Boys [Reissue/1974] 2xLP (Rhino)
Good Old Boys was Newman's first album to obtain major commercial success, peaking at #36 on the Billboard 200. It was initially envisioned as a concept album about a character named Johnny Cutler, an everyman of the Deep South. Newman made a demo of these songs on February 1, 1973, that are featured on the second LP. As on his previous release, Newman addressed generally taboo topics such as slavery and racism, most stringently on the opening song "Rednecks", a simultaneous satire on institutional racism in the Deep South and the hypocrisy of the northern states in response.

Bartees Strange – Live @ Studio 4 LP (Run For Cover)
Orange/brown w/ yellow twist color vinyl. Following the release of Bartees Strange's stunning debut Live Forever, Bartees and his band took a trip to Conshohocken PA to record an electric set of album tracks and other songs from his catalog with producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Tigers Jaw). The performance has been pressed on limited color vinyl and offers a new look at one of the most exciting songwriters in the game today. The performance covers most of Bartees Strange's 2020 LP, an album of the year for that year from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, The New Yorker, Stereogum and more. Tracked only months after that record's release, this live set perfectly encapsulates what those outlets found so intriguing about Strange - tying a "dizzying blend of genre work" together as Stereogum said into an album that celebrates its myriad influences.
Phuong Tam - Magical Nights: Saigon Surf, Twist & Soul (1964-1966) 2LP (Sublime Frequencies)
The first ever retrospective of Phương Tâm, the groundbreaking Saigon teenager who became one of the first singers to perform and record rock and roll in 1960s Vietnam. The unique qualities of Phương Tâm's voice, coupled with her commanding stage presence, had swiftly elevated her to top billings on Saigon's nightclub stages. Globally, musical trends with wild, ephemeral dance crazes were being thought up weekly; the twist, hully gully, the mashed potato -- none of them a problem for Phương Tâm. Her energy translated unsurprisingly well in the studio, backed by electric guitars, contrabass, drums, lush brass sections, saxophone, piano, organ and rich backing vocals. The teenage starlet became a vital centerpiece of pop music of the time, and one of the very first singers to perform and record rock and roll (known locally as nhạc kích động, or, action music) -- though as you'll hear, she could also transform a jazz ballad into something otherworldly.

Stripped down and recorded without any bells and whistles, this is Tony Joe recording himself playing his classic swamp blues sound. The LP is regarded as the first album where Tony Joe controlled all elements of the studio. Until 2020, White's twenty-ninth album had been long out of print. New West Records released a limited-edition color vinyl pressing that was the first and only pressing of this record. The LP was remastered and re-sequenced for that specific pressing. Due to popular demand, New West brings the title back to CD and vinyl packaged in a standard jacket with a color sleeve. [Indie store exclusive blue vinyl.]
ZZ Top – Raw: ‘That Little Ol’ Band From Texas’ Soundtrack CD/LP (BMG)
Sturdy American blues-rock trio ZZ Top was formed in 1970 in and around Houston from rival bands. Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their success continued unabated throughout the '70s, culminating with the year-and-a-half-long Worldwide Texas Tour. Raw was recorded in connection with the band's wildly popular and critically lauded 2019 Netflix documentary That Little Ol' Band From Texas. [Indie exclusive tangerine color vinyl pressing is available.]
