Thomas Rhett - About a Woman
Thomas Rhett - About a Woman
Already crowned as one of country’s most consistent-yet-dynamic modern superstars, Thomas Rhett has become a master of the high-wire act that is creative growth. With both songwriting prowess and charisma, his six previous albums were fueled by equal parts energy and emotion, balancing commercial success with artistic dexterity to continually keep fans on their toes. But for his seventh full-length set, About A Woman, he just wants to put them on their feet.
“From top to bottom, I just wanted to exude joy and fun – and really just make people move,” Rhett says, describing a set which takes timeless romantic nostalgia to country’s progressive cutting edge. “I was thinking like, ‘Man, I haven’t just made a record that my kids and my wife want to dance to in a while. So how do I make that possible?’”
Starting in earnest as the summer of 2023 began, Rhett ended up with roughly 150 songs – but instead of following the double-album trend (which was a real consideration), he went in the opposite direction, choosing eight he couldn’t live without and building from there.
Fourteen anthemic instant classics were the result, diverse in style but connected by a sense of movement. Skipping his usual array of ballads (except one absolute standout), the tempos were kept high and the melodies tight, and while organic country makes up the foundation, layers of “‘80s retro sounds” and thumping beats help Rhett find new ways to do what he does so well – tribute a woman’s love.
Rhett co-wrote all but one track on the project, working with a team of trusted Nashville hitmakers and pop-schooled newcomers to get the best of both creative worlds. It was a similar situation in the studio, as once again producer Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Shania Twain) was joined by Julian Bunetta (One Direction, Sabrina Carpenter, Teddy Swims), and others who often had a hand in creating a track they co-wrote.
